Winning the Battle Against Alopecia

by Benedict Smythe

There have been a lot of people that have seemed perfectly healthy, live a clean lifestyle, but still experience the perils of spot baldness. This condition (known as Alopecia as well) is responsible for creating bald spots on the scalp of both men and women alike. The root cause of this condition is still unknown and no definite cures have been found. The consolation to this is that half of the patients of this condition grow their hair back in about a year or so. Doctors employ different kinds of treatments to promote hair growth and to contain hair loss but there are non-medical ways to deal with it.

Wearing wigs

Wearing wigs can be a fun and exciting experience. The wig making industry has created different kinds of wigs to match the skin tone and body structure of a variety of people. You can find a number of different colors, lengths, and styles of wigs in their respective stores. You can try them out and seem which one fits you best.

Wearing hats

Sporting different head gear is also another way to compensate for uncontrollable hair loss. You can let out the artist in you be expressing your fashion sense through mix and matching your outfits. You can choose from different styles and colors of berets, beanies, caps, and top hats to give you different looks for different occasions.

Natural supplements

There are pills and creams that are available that are said to promote the regeneration of our beloved head hair. They are usually found in places like pharmacies and health supplement stores. The ingredients used in them widely vary and there are those that don't do any good at all, while others have worked miracles for people with hair loss problems.

Stargazing

There have been a lot of Hollywood celebrities that have used the bald look to their advantage. They would create a different type of aura when they would attend events and/or appear in movies. Stars such as Bruce Willis (Die Hard Trilogy), Jack Nicholson (Batman), Billy Zane( The Phantom), and Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy) all have little or no hair at all but don't seem to care. They would have a certain swagger in the way they walk, which exudes dignity and confidence.

Looking at how these stars carry themselves, it's easy to see that having hair loss is not a big problem. There is a saying that goes "If life gives you lemons, make lemonade". This pretty much sums up the attitude one should have towards a balding head. If you think positively, you can turn things around and make baldness one of your strengths instead of your weakness. No matter how you would choose to deal with alopecia, what matters most is that you actually deal with it.

You should not lose hope and fight with every ounce of strength you can muster. There are people out there that have had to face worse problems (such as Senator John McCain being a prisoner of war for up to 5 years!) and still had the strength to over come it.

by John Browning

Dandruff is a very common problem that affects most of us. In fact, one out of every two is affected by this annoying skin disorder. However, dandruff can be kept under control by maintaining proper hygiene. Here are some simple tips to keep dandruff at bay:

# Wash your hair regularly: Wash your hair every time you take a bath i.e. at least 2 times a day. It is very much important to wash your hair after you sweat as sweat can aggravate the condition. Use a medicated shampoo for best results. Shampoos containing Nizoral are very effective against dandruff. You can buy Nizoral online at many online stores. It is important that you don't change shampoo brands often. Use a good shampoo and use it consistently.

# Don't scratch: Dandruff will cause itching. Restrain from scratching/rubbing as it will only make the problem worse. Apply neem oil and massage gently to obtain relief from itching.

# Stop using hair gels/dyes: Don't use hair styling gels and dyes excessively. These contain harmful chemicals that can damage your hair. Use natural products instead. These are usually much mild on the hair.

It is possible to control by using natural remedies. Here are some natural remedies that have been proven to keep dandruff under check:

# Tea tree oil: Tea tree oil is a natural cure for dandruff. It contains compounds called "terpenoids" which have antifungal and antiseptic properties. Tea tree oil is commonly used in soaps, shampoos and hair oil for its anti-fungal properties. It is also used to treat other conditions like acne, athlete's foot, thrush and yeast infections.

# Vinegar: Dilute 2 teaspoons of pure vinegar in 6 teaspoons of water. Apply it to your scalp and let your scalp soak for a few hours. Shampoo your hair afterwards. Repeat this daily for a few days and you will see good results.

# Lemon juice: Lemon juice is a well know natural dandruff remedy. Rub 2 teaspoons of lemon juice to your scalp and let is stay for sometime. Wash your hair afterwards. You can also try mixing equal parts of lemon juice with vinegar for better results.

# Neem oil: Neem oil is very effective against fungal infections. To treat dandruff, apply about 1 teaspoonful of neem oil to your hair and massage gently. Neem oil will provide relief from itching and skin reddening and also strengthen your hair.

If you are still not able to get relief from dandruff after using these natural remedies, it is advisable to visit a doctor or skin care expert.
